Leslie Ellen Garretson Lewis, 57, died peacefully at home, Thursday evening, March 10, 2016, surrounded by her family after a long battle with cancer.

Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Eldridge Randolph Garretson; her mother, Carole MacKay Garretson, and her brother, Scot Randolph Garretson.

Surviving are her husband, MAJ Stuart Ross Lewis, U.S. Army (Ret.); a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Meeks of Savannah, Georgia; a son, John “Beau” Harold Meeks, Jr. of Richmond, Hill Georgia; three sisters, Ginger G. Powell and her husband, Charles, of Greenville, North Carolina, Jayne G. Holland of Savannah, Georgia and Alex G. Hodges and her husband, Al, of Hatteras, North Carolina; her nieces and nephews, Mark MacKay Powell, Penny Powell Glover, and her husband, Earnie, Benjamin Randolph Holland, Michael Rhett Holland and his wife, Sarah, Christopher Ryan Holland, Ashley Christine Hodges, Meredith Adelaide Hodges, Rebecca Caroline Hodges and Joseph Al Hodges III, and her great-nephews and nieces, Joshua, Zoe, Bella, Jack, Ty and Luke.

Ellen will also be greatly missed by Stuart’s children, Stuart Ross Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Hannah, and Robert Milton Lewis. Her absence will be grievously missed by their two very special four legged friends, Molly and Edel.

The family will receive friends from 3 until 5 o’clock Sunday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.

A celebration of life will be held at 10 o’clock Monday morning at White Bluff United Methodist Church in Savannah conducted by The Reverend Nelle Bordeaux. Burial will be at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon in Beaufort National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Cancer Society – Suite 206, 6600 Abercorn Street, Savannah, Georgia 31405 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Roland Eugene Lance, 73, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Frann Tucker Lance, died Saturday evening, March 12, 2016, at Savannah Square.

lance - roland (150 x 239)Born in Acworth, Georgia, he was a son of the late Clinton Eugene Lance and the late June Theda Coleman Lance. Roland was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church. He was a United States Coast Guard veteran. Roland graduated and was an enthusiastic supporter of Georgia Southern University. He managed Belk at Crossroads Shopping Center for 34 years where he was well-loved and made everyone there a part of the family. Roland started an annual Belk reunion which today is still well attended. He was an avid fisherman and a member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, Oglethorpe Lodge #1. Roland was a very kindhearted and thoughtful man who enjoyed doing for others and he was loved by all who met him. He greeted everyone with a smile and gentle handshake and never met a stranger.

In addition to his wife of 43 years and his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, James Byron Tucker.

Surviving are his mother-in-law, Lucille Griffin Tucker of Savannah, Georgia; several aunts and uncles and several cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Tuesday evening and from 11 until 12 o’clock Wednesday morning at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.

The funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Wednesday afternoon at the graveside, Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, conducted by The Reverend Dr. R. H. Craig.

Abram Morris Rubin, 78, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Barbara Haskins Rubin, died Thursday morning, March 17, 2016, at Memorial University Medical Center.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was a son of the late Irving Rubin and the late Madeline Sadler Rubin. Mr. Rubin was a lifetime member of Congregation Agudath Achim and a past president of the Chevra Kadisha. He was president of A. F. King and Son Realtors.

In addition to his wife of almost 50 years and his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey Rubin.

Surviving are one daughter, Robyn Aston and her husband, Bruce, of Marietta, Georgia; two sons, Steven A. Rubin and Craig B. Rubin and his wife, Julie, all of Roswell, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Adam Aston, Genna Aston, Heath Aston, Kaylah Rubin, Harris Rubin, Jessica Rubin, Isabella Rubin and Evan Rubin; one sister, Elise Shernoff and her husband, Victor, of Savannah, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Nina Hershon and her husband, Lee, of Charleston, South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would also like to thank Rosa Roberts, Ruby Davis, Dorothy (Dot) Brown Williams, Ethel Fripp, and Doreen Smith for taking care of Mr. Rubin.

The funeral service will be held at 12 noon Sunday at the graveside, Bonaventure Cemetery, conducted by Rabbi Moshe Silberschein.

CPO Melvin Douglas Wilson, U. S. Coast Guard (Ret.), 78, of Port Wentworth, Georgia and husband of Joanne Shuman Wilson, died Friday afternoon, March 18, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.

wilson - douglas0002 (150 x 219)Born in Atlanta, Georgia, he was a son of the late Robert Wilson and the late Geffry Alta Elkins Stamey. Doug attended Bonnybridge Baptist Church. He retired as an Aviation Electrician’s Mate Chief Petty Officer after 20 years of service in the United States Coast Guard. After retirement Doug worked for 13 years for Gulfstream and for 13 years for Lockheed Martin International. He and Joanne were avid square dancers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Marshall Douglas Wilson and his wife, Kris; a grandson, Charles Nathan Callaway, and a brother, William “Bill” Harley Wilson.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Joanne Shuman Wilson of Port Wentworth, Georgia; one son, Joseph D. Wilson and his wife, Taylor, of Cartersville, Georgia; four grandchildren, Amanda Hammock and her husband, Scott, Jessica Wilson and her fiancé, Cohen Grizzard, Collin Wilson and Maddox Wilson, and four great-grandchildren, Mattilynn Lee Callaway, Marshall Lehman Callaway, Ethan Hammock and Grace Hammock.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 o’clock Monday afternoon at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah.

The funeral service will be held at 2 o’clock Monday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend Paul Battles. Interment, with full military honors, will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Dr. Jerry Watt Wilson, 66, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Myron Kleiner Wilson, died Friday afternoon, March 18, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.

wilson - jerry (150 x 239)Born in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, he was a son of the late Robert Leslie Wilson and the late Bessie Knight Wilson. He was a United States Army veteran. Dr. Wilson received his Bachelor of Science (1972) and Master of Business Administration (1973) degrees from Arkansas State University, where he was also a member of Phi Kappa Phi honor society. He earned his Doctor of Business Administration from Memphis State University in 1989, where he was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma Chapter in 1987 and awarded membership into the Alpha Mu Alpha National Marketing Honorary in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in marketing. He began his career teaching at both Arkansas State and Memphis State while completing his education. Dr. Wilson joined the faculty of Georgia Southern University in the fall of 1988 and was promoted to Professor of Marketing in the fall of 1999.

During his tenure, Dr. Wilson cofounded the nationally ranked Logistics and Intermodal Transportation undergraduate department at Georgia Southern. In 2000, he was awarded the Maxwell Powell Memorial award for his exemplary accomplishments and in recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contributions to the advancements of transportation education. In October 2001, the Jerry W. Wilson Scholarship for Logistics and Intermodal Transportation was established in his honor for his dedication to his profession, his unmatched devotion to both the university and the students, and for being an inspiring teacher, leader and mentor.

Additionally, he served as chair/acting chair/interim director for numerous departments over the course of his last six years with Georgia Southern. During 2012-2013, he served as Interim Associate Dean of The College of Business Administration. His most recent publications have appeared in the Transportation Journal and The International Journal of Case Studies. Dr. Wilson was Editor Emeritus of the Journal of Transportation Management and a member of the Board of Examiners for the American Society of Transportation and Logistics professional certification program (CTL, Certified in Transportation of Logistics). He received the 20th annual Operation Stimulus Outstanding Educator of the Year award from the Colorado Transportation Community. For his many contributions to several departments, the college, the university, and the profession during his 27 year career at Georgia Southern, Dr. Wilson earned the title of Professor Emeritus of Marketing at the time of his retirement in December 2015.

Dr. Wilson enjoyed Mustangs, motorcycles, dirt bikes, shooting guns, and was an avid golfer. Most important to him was his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren “the babies”. He and Myron loved traveling together often taking long road trips, exploring the countryside, and tasting new wine and beers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Wilson Roberts.

Surviving are his wife of 15 years, Myron Kleiner Wilson; five children, John David Wilson and his wife, Tammy, Elise Michelle Bowen and her husband, Brian, William Lee Palefsky and his wife, Liza, Lainie Wilson Harris and her husband, Scott, and Andrea Michelle Wilson (“Tiny One Baby Girl”); eight grandchildren, Rebecka Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Stella Bowen, Sasha Bowen, Valerie Morris, Emma Palefsky, Ella Harris and Russell Harris; his brother, Bob Wilson and his wife, Mary; his brother-in-law, Donald Roberts, and nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 6:30 Monday at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.

The funeral service will be held at 6:30 Monday evening in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will be private.

Marylin Youmans, a long-time resident of Savannah, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2016, at her home surrounded by family.

youmans - marylin2 (150 x 181)Born in Rhine, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late George Lawton Youmans and the late Maree Beatrice Beecher Youmans. Marylin was of the Baptist faith. As a teenager, she opened her own dance studio, Marylin Youmans School of Dance, which has become a landmark in the area. She dedicated her life to sharing her passion of dance with almost every little girl, and many boys, who lived in the area. Many generations have walked through those very same doors on 37th Street. This summer the studio will celebrate its 80th dance recital. She taught many more lessons in life than just how to point toes and tap heels as she loved, inspired, and mentored all of her students as they were her own children. For her devotion to her community, Marylin was awarded the Key to the City by then Savannah Mayor, John P. Rousakis.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her four siblings, Marguerite Parrish, Beatrice Kleinpeter, George L. Youmans and Carl H. Youmans.

She is survived by her daughter, Marylin Daniels and her husband, Robert; her grandchildren, Marylin Jacobs and her husband, Benjamin, Robert Daniels III and his wife, Jennifer, Kelly Houston and Tricia Lee and her husband, Matt; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher, Kayley and Kimberly Jacobs, Rob, Erin and Emily Daniels, Thomas and Cassady Houston, and Daniel Lee; several nieces and nephews; and thousands of dancers.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 o’clock Wednesday at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah.

The funeral service will be held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by The Reverend B. Derward Poole, Jr. Interment will be in Hillcrest Abbey – East.

Thomas “Tucker” Edward White, Sr., 86, of Savannah, Georgia and widower of Ann Theresa Byrnes White, died peacefully early Thursday morning, March 24, 2016, at Hospice Savannah.

white - tom (150 x 114)Born on September 6, 1929, in Savannah, Georgia, he was a son of the late John Patrick White, Sr. and Mary Conneff White. Mr. White attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and Benedictine Military School (Class of ’47). He served in the United States Air Force Reserves. Mr. White was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church for many years and, later in life, the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, where he was honored to serve as an usher. He was a proud member of the Hibernian Society of Savannah, St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and BC Survivors Club.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia White Price and her husband, William J. “Chub” Price, and Anne White Holland and her husband Jack Holland; one brother, John “Jack” Patrick White, Jr. and his wife, Jewel White; a sister-in-law, Julie Lingenfelser and her husband, George Lingenfelser, Sr., and two nieces, Mary Anne White Eaton and Angela White Kohel.

Surviving are a devoted and loving daughter, Ann Marie White of Savannah, Georgia; a son, Thomas Edward White, Jr. and his wife, Colleen, of Lombard, Illinois; three grandchildren, Margaret Ann White, Elizabeth Jane White and Thomas Edward White III; a brother-in-law, Jack Byrnes and his wife, Mary Ann; and many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mr. White truly cherished each and every one of them.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock Wednesday at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the Rosary service being held at 7 o’clock in the funeral home chapel.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 o’clock Thursday morning in the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Interment will be in the Catholic Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Billy Adams, John Byrnes, Pat Holland, Tom Holland, George Lingenfelser, Andrew Price, Joe Welch and Patrick White.

Theresa Stackley Buchheit Ryan, 94, of Savannah, Georgia and widow of Thomas Joseph Ryan, Jr., died Sunday morning, March 27, 2016, at Hospice Savannah surrounded by her family.

Born in Savannah, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Fred Lewis Buchheit and the late Mary Best Buchheit. Mrs. Ryan was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was a devoted Christian with a strong faith in God. Mrs. Ryan graduated from Commercial High School. She was a member of the Daughters of Ireland and loved traveling with her family in the United States and Ireland. Mrs. Ryan was a very giving person who also donated her time serving meals at Nativity School and at Benedictine. She adored her family and her friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Aloysius Ryan, Jr.; four sisters, Mozelle Miller, Elizabeth Alonso, Agnes “Freddie” Buck and Sue Hennessy, and two brothers, Phillip and Frank Buchheit.

Surviving are one daughter, Theresa Schopler and her husband, Dr. Tom, of Hollywood, Florida; three sons, Thomas Joseph Ryan III and his wife, Cindy, Fred L. Ryan and his wife, Debbie, and Robert A. Ryan and his wife, Naomi, all of Savannah, Georgia; seven grandchildren, T. J. Ryan IV, Freddie Ryan, Jr. and his wife, Emily, Matt Ryan and his wife, Vandi, and Daniel Ryan, and six great-grandchildren, Emily, Kathryn and Madison Ryan and Dylan, Hannah and Jason Brown.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 o’clock Thursday at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue, with the Rosary service being held at 7 o’clock in the funeral home chapel.

As a United States Army veteran, he served in the Korean Conflict. Mr. Conner was of the Baptist faith. He was avid golfer and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by two daughters, Julie A. Ulmer and her husband, Gary, of Columbia, South Carolina and Laurie J. McCain and her husband, T. J., of Savannah; a son, Michael N. Conner and his wife, Paula, of Savannah; a brother, Harold E. “Patches” Conner, of Savannah; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one niece, and one nephew.

Putman Vance Jones, 80, of Savannah, Georgia and husband of Carol Jean Joyce Jones, died Tuesday afternoon, April 5, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Born in Columbus, Georgia, he was a son of the late James Rufus Jones and the late Cora Taylor Jones. Putman was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Army veteran. Putman was a retired clerk for CSX Railroad. He loved his family, his friends, and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his wife of almost 36 years, Carol Jean Joyce Jones of Savannah, Georgia; seven sons, Bryan Manna and his wife, Raychelle, of Denver, Colorado, Jack Jones and his wife, Abbie, Joey Jones and his wife, Audrey, Mark Jones and his wife, Donna, Chris Jones and his wife, Shea, and Putt Jones and his wife, Sabrina, all of Savannah, Georgia, and Todd Everett Jones, M. D. of Gainesville, Florida; eleven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

ALFRED GOODBEE SEEGER

Alfred Goodbee Seeger passed away surrounded by family on April 8th, 2016 at the age of 77 in Savannah, Georgia due to complications following a heart attack.

AlfredSeeger (150 x 194)Born July 20th, 1938 in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the son of Frederick Gustav Seeger and Anna Alpha (Goodbee) Seeger. Al graduated from St. Paul’s School in 1956 and attended Louisiana State University. He proudly served in the Louisiana Air National Guard, known then as the “Coonass Militia,” from 1958 – 68, as an F-102 fighter interceptor pilot, and graduated from Officer’s Candidate School in 1962. He followed that with a great 32 year career as an international airline pilot for TWA, flying the Boeing 707, 727, 747, the McDonald-Douglas 80, and his favorite, the Lockheed Martin 1011, including two years of flying from Travis Air Force Base to Vietnam transporting troops and cargo. While based in San Francisco, he fell in love with and married Mary Benette Hilkeman on Treasure Island on November 30th, 1968. They returned to Covington, Louisiana to build a wonderful life and raise three children. Throughout his life, his hobbies included being a gentleman cattle farmer, vegetable gardener, and, since his retirement in 1997, the captain of his RV, traveling the USA with his wife of 47 years Mary Ben.

His other survivors include his beloved children, Alison Goodbee Seeger, Benjamin Carl Seeger and his wife, Jennifer (Rhea) Seeger and their two children, Isabelle Rose and Jacob Alfred, and Anna Elizabeth (Seeger) Jolly and her husband, Brian Edward Jolly; his brother, Frederick Charles Seeger, and many nieces and nephews.

Al was a very loving, kind and generous man and an all around “good guy.” He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Paul’s School (stpauls.com) or St. Joseph’s Abbey (saintjosephabbey.com) in Covington, La., or St. Joseph’s/Candler Heart Hospital (sjchs.org) or Hospice Savannah (hospicesavannah.org) in Savannah, Ga.

An open memorial service will be held at Our Lady of Peace Chapel on St. Paul’s School campus on Saturday, April 16th at 9:30am. Burial will be private.

Margaret Louise Hall Hutcherson, 79, of Savannah, Georgia and wife of CMSgt Robert Everett “Hutch” Hutcherson, U. S. Air Force (Ret.), died Wednesday afternoon, April 13, 2016, at Riverview Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Alma, Georgia, she was a daughter of the late Cecil Hall and the late Martha Wages Arrington. Margaret was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple. She was a 1954 graduate of Commercial High School and was a homemaker. Margaret loved her family and enjoyed raising money for children’s hospitals.

Surviving are her husband of more than 59 years, Robert Everett “Hutch” Hutcherson of Savannah, Georgia; two daughters, Terri L. Coppage and her husband, Ronnie, of Guyton, Georgia and Kathy M. Hutcherson of Atlanta, Georgia; two grandsons, John W. “Trey” Lariscy III and his wife, Tobi, and Joseph Tyler Lariscy; three great-grandchildren, Bradley Lariscy, Brooklyn Lariscy and Scotlyn Lariscy, and one brother, Dennis Arrington and his wife, Jan, of Ellabell, Georgia.

The family will receive friends from 11 until 1 o’clock Friday at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue.

The funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service. Interment will be in the Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery.

Katha “Kathie” George Wilkes Moore, of Brooklet, Georgia, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning on her 68th birthday, April 13, 2016, at her home.

moore - kathie (150 x 224)Born in Bethesda, Maryland, she was a daughter of the late Ralph David George and the late Hazel Marie Lamb George.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her step-mother, Mattie George; her brothers, Tommie George and Kenny George, and her step-brother, Truitt Jordan.

Surviving are four daughters, Simone Wilkes White and her husband, John, Shannon Wilkes, Stacey Wilkes and Stephanie Moore and her husband, Stacy; two sisters, Karen Urban and Marianne Smith and her husband, Tim; three step-sisters, Jean Hartley and her husband, Dan, Mary Lou Gillis and her husband, Shannon, and Judy Crosby; twelve grandchildren, Daniel Butler, Sierra Asuncion, Summer Asuncion, Selena Asuncion, John White, Jr., Trey Hopkins, Andrew Hopkins, Alexis Burke, Zachary Burke, Elizabeth Morgan, Taylor Scott and Terry Scott, Jr.; one great-grandson, Stephen Dampier, Jr., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 10 until 12 Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Gamble Funeral Service – 410 Stephenson Avenue, Savannah.

A celebration of life service will be held at 12 Saturday in the chapel of Gamble Funeral Service conducted by Greg McAlister. Interment will be private.

Suzanne Iris Lissner Bernard, 53, of Savannah, Georgia and wife of Edward Bernard, died Thursday morning, April 14, 2016, at Candler Hospital.
